The idea
An interest inventory can tell a ninth-grader she might like health care. It cannot put her in scrubs beside a working nurse, teach her what a shift feels like, or show her the math inside a medication dose. Career-connected schools do that — through CTE programs, youth apprenticeships, employer partnerships, and academics taught inside applied work. Students come out with durable skills, real credentials, academic credit, and something rarer: an earned sense of where they might belong.
Why it works
On-time graduation for CTE concentrators compared with similar students who were not concentrators, across 112,764 students in Nebraska and South Dakota (REL Central, Brodersen et al. 2021).
Quasi-experimentalA year, eight years after high school, for students randomly assigned to Career Academies, with no difference in diplomas or college completion (MDRC, Kemple with Willner 2008).
RCTEarly college students who held a college degree about a year after high school, compared with students who lost the admission lottery (American Institutes for Research, Berger et al. 2013).

You're right that you can't staff it the way you staff English. Every district that runs these programs staffs them differently — industry professionals, alternative certification, shared regional staff, co-teaching pairs.

The facilities question usually assumes the wrong model. The buildings and much of the budget may already exist in your region — in employers’ spaces, a community college, or a school you’re about to close.
